A Love Story in Bronze: Unveiling the Inspiration Behind St. George's City Hall Sculpture
Love, art, and history intertwine in this captivating tale.
As the new City Hall in St. George, Utah, nears completion, a unique sculpture stands as its focal point, awaiting installation. But this isn't just any sculpture; it's a heartfelt tribute to love and the founding story of St. George itself.
Meet Jerry Anderson, a 90-year-old artist with a passion for historical and Western-themed sculptures. His latest creation, a bronze masterpiece, immortalizes the love story of David and Wilhelmina Cannon, pioneers who played a pivotal role in the establishment of St. George.
"Without her, I wouldn't be who I am today," Jerry shares, referring to his wife Fawn, whom he has cherished for 71 years. Fawn, a constant source of support and inspiration, has been by Jerry's side since his early days as an artist. Even after a recent stroke, she continues to manage his affairs, a testament to their enduring partnership.
But here's where it gets controversial... Is it the artist's love for his wife that inspired this sculpture, or is it the love story of St. George's founders? Jerry hints at both, leaving us with a thought-provoking question.
And this is the part most people miss... The sculpture, a labor of love, required 300 pounds of clay and weeks of meticulous work. Jerry was inspired by the idea of honoring women pioneers like Wilhelmina and the power of love.
"Every town has its hero, and every hero deserves a place in bronze," Jerry asserts. When asked about his hero, his answer is as simple as it is profound: "This girl."
FOX 13 News was privileged to witness the sculpture's unveiling at the Andersons' studio in Leeds, located at the Silver Reef Historic Site. The formal reveal will take place in January at the new City Hall, where the sculpture will stand as a testament to love, history, and the enduring spirit of St. George.
What do you think? Is this sculpture a beautiful tribute to love and history, or does it miss the mark? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
